Our History

 

The Highlands Twilight 5K was founded in 2013 as the Twilight Rock n Roll 5k by the Rotary Club of Highlands as a fundraiser for youth activities in Highlands, NC.  The Highlands Chamber of Commerce became our first major sponsor to promote tourist activities in Highlands.  Our first year had 130 runners and raised $8500.00 to put new free weight equipment in at the Highland Civic Center.  In 2014 we grew to 250 runners and raised $11,000.00 towards the new running track and softball field at Highlands School.  In 2015 300 runners showed up and over $14,000.00 was raised for equipment for our youth swim team, the Highlands Hurricanes. 2016 proceeds went to finish the skating area at Kelsey-Hutchinson Park.  In 2017 we raised $18,500 to finish the new track at Highlands School, while buying more equipment to enhance the race. For 2018 and 2019 we raised $25,000 each year to improve youth mental health services in Highlands and purchase improved technology for our school.  We have raised approximately $25,000 ever year since, and a total above $200,000. It is our goal to be the premier 5K event in our area.  USATF certified (NC16004DW) 5K, so if you need a certified qualifying time, come run with us!  Make your reservations for accommodations early and spend the night in beautiful Highlands, NC.
